The European Conferences on Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) are the principal annual conferences enabling mobility practitioners, policy and decision makers and academics from across the continent to meet in an inspiring, informative and creative forum for exchange.

What do we mean by the theme for this year’s event, “Sustainable mobility for everyone”? Within the overall conference theme, the following topics will be explored:

Sustainable mobility for all cities – Within a climate of economic uncertainty and often reduced spending by the public sector, can we demonstrate to all cities that investment in SUMP is worth the investment – is it really paying off? And, from a common starting point of the European Commission’s Urban Mobility Package and the Guidelines for Developing and Implementing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, how do we tailor the approaches to different city contexts, scales and financial limits?

Sustainable mobility for all people – The socio-demographic make-up of our cities is changing, and so too are the ways people are choosing to travel. What are the trends and how should this influence the measures we select now for implementation over the next 20-30 years? How do we ensure that Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans are representative and cater for the needs of all people in society? What are the practical steps cities can take?

The programme also provides the opportunity for attendees to learn about Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning activities in the host country, Romania, and attend planning techniques sessions dealing with specific aspects of the planning process.

Romania creates impetus for Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning - Romania provides an inspiring and informative host country for the 2015 conference, as the government has been active in putting in place legislation for Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans and eight cities have recently embarked on preparing Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans through the Growth Poles Programme.

Planning techniques – Cities have highlighted specific challenges in the mobility planning process, such as the collection of baseline data in Romania for example. The intention of the Planning Technique sessions will be to explore specific activities and tasks within the Guidelines in greater detail, with the aim of delivering clear recommendations.
